Commuters hit by road chaos

HUNDREDS of people were caught up in rush-hour traffic chaos this morning following the closure of the Catsfield to Ninfield Road.

Journeys to work became a gruelling slog for many as the closure caused a tail-back almost two miles long between the villages.

The road is closed as East Sussex County Council contractors continue to install a roundabout at the junction opposite the Kings Arms Pub in Ninfield.

What would usually be a 10 minute trip from Ninfield to Bexhill took almost an hour-and-a-half for some travellers.

Country lanes linking the surrounding towns and villages quickly became choked with vehicles looking for alternative routes to work or schools.

Freezeland Lane became blocked as heavy lorries and dustcarts found themselves stuck on the narrow road.

The route was still jammed at 9.30 this morning.

Traffic on Watermill Lane slowed to a crawl due to the volume of cars.

Other roads were also badly affected.

Services to residents were hit, with vehicles belonging to Rother District Council's waste contractors, Verdant, and buses caught in the snarl-up.

The road was closed for a time yesterday (Sunday) and caused smaller scale traffic jams.
