A low-flying plane was spotted circling Pound Hill and Maidenbower on Monday morning (August 24) leaving many residents concerned and confused.

The aircraft was spotted flying over the area multiple times by residents.

William Barnett, from Pound Hill, said he saw the plane fly over his home five times in the space of an hour and half.

He said: “It was a small passenger jet. The landing gear was up and he looked as if he was flying low.

“We are directly south of the airport and it looked as if it was flying at a 45 degree angle to the runway.

“It is extremely unusual to be flying as he did and to fly over five times. They wouldn’t usually fly an aircraft like that over here.”

A spokesperson for Gatwick Airport explained the plane had just taken off and due to bad weather had been given permission to change its route.

The spokesperson said: “Because there were storms a handful of aircraft were allowed to differ off from their preferred route.

“The aircraft had just taken off which is why the landing gear was still up and it was given permission by air traffic control to change its route.

“The aircraft continued on to where it was going.”
