Congratulations to competitive Forest pupils

13-year-old, Jordon Powell, cooked up a winning menu at the recent District Round of the Rotary young chef competition, sending him through to the regional semi-final.

Jordon, one of the youngest competitors, wowed the judges with his menu of thai prawn soup with lemongrass, fillet of beef with salsa and cashew nut sauce, and pear poached in red wine served with orange mascarpone.

The national competition, run by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI), offers young chefs the opportunity to cook for distinguished judges and spend the day with Michelin-starred Head Chef, Phil Thomson, at Auberge Du Lac.

Jordan said the executive chef at the South Lodge Hotel in Horsham has been supporting him since the competition. He said: “It has been amazing spending time in his kitchen developing my skills and experience.”

Jordon has also been offered the opportunity to spend the day with the head chef at the House of Commons.

Forest school’s year nine sports leaders also proved their diligence when they hosted a six-a-side football tournament for more than 40 pupils in the Association of Small Schools in Horsham (ASSH) competition.

Year nine pupil and sports leader, Will Sanderson, said: “I really enjoyed the opportunity to get involved with the organisation and running of this event. It helped me to develop my leadership, organisation and referee skills.”
