Controversial hospital plans would put 'right resources in the right places'

CHANGES in local hospital services would allow them to keep abreast with advances in medicine, it was claimed at a meeting to discuss controversial health plans last night (Thursday).

Five officials on an expert panel in Lewes backed restructuring plans to the existing healthcare structure.

And no change was not an option.

The changes could see A&E and maternity services being lost at the Princess Royal Hospital.

John Wilderspin, West Sussex Primary Care Trust chairman, said: 'People are living longer and health needs are changing.

'It is not about cutting services or closing hospitals.

'We have to put the right resources in the right places.'

But Dr Henry Ashby, from the Campaign to Save Princess Royal Hospital, said 160 GPs from 40 practices told him the PCT options for change would endanger the 260,000 patients on their books.

He said 'Not a single practioner feel the options are suitable.

'We believe they are fundamentally flawed.'

The next West Sussex PCT meeting will be held at the Shoreham Centre, Shoreham on September 17.
