Mr Short, a former Lewes resident who now lives in Seaford, said: 'I have been warned that if I accidentally display my badge incorrectly again the penalty will be enforced.

I would like to make known my sincere appreciation to the Sussex Express and to all the many people who have conveyed their warm feelings and support.

'My wife and I have regularly visited Lewes every week for the last ten years but in the light of the present situation we do not feel inclined to continue, which I particularly regret as Lewes is my home town. We calculate that we have had regular relations with some 25 businesses in the town and we now realise the implications if many other visitors are driven away in this fashion.'
