West Sussex County Council announced that the A283 between Water Lane and Hampers Lane in Storrington will be closed for highway drainage improvements and flood alleviation.

The council website states the work will be undertaken by Balfour Beatty for seven weeks, from January 20 to March 9, but road signs suggest it will take six weeks.

Philip Circus , county councillor for the Storrington division, said: “I’m very concerned about it. It’s going to be a serious dislocation and will cause conciderable traffic problems around Storrington.”

The council website states that delays are expected on the A283, with increased traffic on A280 Long Furlong, A24, A29 and A272 - this will also be the diversion route when the road closures are in operation.

“I hope the work will be completed as soon as possible but we have got to get the work right,” added Mr Circus.

“I fully understand the concerns of local residents because I’m a resident myself.

“These works are necessary and that’s why they’re being undertaken.”

To control traffic flow, the council said it will impose two way traffic signals, on a 24 hour operation, with two weekend road closures.

There will also be manual control at peak times to manage the tidal flow.

Mr Circus said: “Closing the road is not a decision taken lightly.

“I will be keeping a very close eye on this and talking to the Highways department to make sure it causes the least inconvenience as possible.”
