COUNTY NEWS: Motor home explosion is suspected arson

Police are treating a motor home explosion on Worthing seafront this morning as suspected arson.

The incident happened at around 1am this morning in Bernard Road, and police and fire engines were quickly at the scene.

A statement by police said: “Police are treating a vehicle fire in Worthing as suspected arson.

“At about 1am on Tuesday (10 May), officers on patrol discovered a camper van on fire in Bernard Road.

“The road was cordoned off while the scene was made safe and firefighters were in attendance.

“The fire was extinguished by 1.30am and the highways authority was called to clear debris from the road.”

A spokesperson from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said that two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus put out the blaze with foam and a high-pressure hose reel, but the motor home was completely destroyed.

He said: “At 1am we were awoken at our house on the seafront by a loud noise.

“We looked out of the window to see a camper van on fire in Bernard Road. Police were in attendance.

“Then there was an explosion as the fire took hold. The fire brigade turned up and dealt with the fire quickly.”

Police are currently investigating the incident.
