Dozens of people were evacuated from a Sussex hospice after a fire broke out in the early hours of the morning (July 11).

Emergency services were called to St Michael’s Hospice, in Upper Maze Hill, St Leonards, at around 1am to tackle the blaze.

The incident was immediately declared a ‘major incident’ by crews.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police said a few residents suffered smoke inhalation but no major injuries have been reported.

They added the incident is now being treated as ‘suspicious’ and police have launched a criminal investigation.

Alternative accommodation was found last night for those who had been evacuated.
