Crawley boy arrested after '˜BB gun fired at houses'

A 12-year-old Crawley boy has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm in a public place.

Police were called to a report of three children with a BB gun in Pound Hill on Saturday afternoon (May 7).

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Officers attended Grattons Drive at 12.32pm where it was alleged that the gun was being fired at houses. However, no damage has been reported.”

The boy was arrested and released on police bail pending further enquiries until June 13.

Crawley Police posted a photo of a gun they seized on social media.

Its Twitter message stated: “A young child found carrying this around Crawley this afternoon. Officers dealt with it appropriately!”

Possession of an immitation firearm in a public place without reasonable excuse or lawful authority is a crime under the Firearms Act 1968.

The offence carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a fine.

The legislation also covers possession of a loaded shotgun, air weapon and any other firearm, loaded or not, together with suitable ammunition.
