Crawley nightclub puts on event for disabled people

A Crawley nightclub has teamed up with a residential care home for people with learning disabilities to run a special fundraising club night.

Little Smugglers and Smugglers Barn residential care homes based in Crawley Down hosted Moka’s first Learning disability club night last month.

Little Smugglers have been fundraising to build as sensory room on site for the past two years and this was one of the money making ideas they have come up with.

It raised just over £400 towards the project.

Moka adapted the lighting and music to make it a great night out for 60 people, many of whom have conditions such as Asperger’s and autism.

Little Smugglers deputy manager Hayley Wilkins, who helped organise it, said: “The night started off great with team leader Harry Smith dressed in full drag welcoming the guests.

“The night was great success with everyone on the dance floor, dancing the night away.

“Everyone was loving the music. It was lovely to see everyone get together from all different homes across the South, friends, family and local community.

“Moka nightclub owners and bar staff were fantastic, opening the club for free, bar staff worked for free and also the fantastic DJ meaning all money raised went towards Little Smugglers sensory room.”

She added: “The DJ said it was one of the best nights he had had because everyone was just getting up and dancing.

“Thanks to everyone at Moka nightclub, we hope to be able to hold these events on regular basis after this huge success.”

Hayley also wanted to thank the staff at Little Smugglers, Smugglers Barn, The Manor, Groveland’s, K2 Crawley and Gateway club, Duckyls Farm.
