Newly metered homes in Crawley are saving enough water to fill more than 16,000 baths every day.
Southern Water said homes in the town that have recently had a meter installed save an average of 1.3 million litres a day.
The company has installed nearly 450,000 meters across Sussex, Kent, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight in the last five years.
Metering has led to a saving of 27 million litres of water a day – enough to meet the daily water needs of towns the size of Worthing and Hastings combined, Southern Water claimed.
It also equates to an average reduction in water bills of £162 a year for 62 per cent of metered households, and reductions in energy bills as heating water in the home makes up around 30 per cent of the average household’s energy bill.
