Broadfield man pleads guilty to causing death by careless driving

A Broadfield man will be sentenced next month after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Alan Wilsdon, 53, of Wilmington Close, entered the guilty plea at Brighton Crown Court on Monday July 13.

He was driving a car that collided with pedestrian Mohammad Akthat Shamim, 80, of Baker Close, Southgate, at the junction of the A23 London Road and Martyrs Avenue on May 18 2014.

Mr Shamim, a popular Muslim leader who played a key role in the founding of the Crawley Islamic Centre (CIC) in London Road, Langley Green in the 1970s, had been in the mosque prior to the collision.

He died in East Surrey Hospital on June 5 2014.

Wilsdon has been released on bail and will be sentenced on Monday August 10. Following the incident, he was disqualified from driving for 12 months.
