Conmen target Asian families in Crawley

Police in Crawley are warning homeowners to be on their guard against conmen who are targeting Asian families and stealing large quantities of jewellery.

There has been an increase in the number of offences in Crawley over the last four months, with a spike in July.

Since April, there have been 12 reported incidents where Asian men purporting to be cavity wall insulation salesmen have preyed on homes in Broadfield, Tilgate, Langley Green, Pound Hill, Gossops Green, Maidenbower, Furnace Green and Southgate.

The burglaries are happening during the daytime and on a number of occasions a large amount of jewellery has been taken.

The offenders are believed to be posing as salesmen wearing fluorescent jackets.

DC Jez Basting, from West Sussex CID, said: “We would like to hear from anyone in Crawley who knows anything about these offences or have been approached by these men who claim to be salesmen.

“This is a timely reminder to all homeowners to always ask for identification of sales people who come to the door, as those who are legitimate will be able to provide this. If in doubt, please contact Sussex Police on 101.
