Crawley man swore at Horsham store manager

A Crawley man has been given a conditional discharge after he pleaded guilty to being disorderly in a Horsham shop.

Shaun Matthew Hayden, 18, of Wold Close, Gossops Green, pleaded guilty to using disorderly behaviour likely to distress people nearby when he appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (June 10).

Melanie Wotton, prosecuting, said Hayden shouted and swore at a the Co-op store manager in Guildford Road on May 3.

Ms Wotton said Hayden continued to abuse the victim after he was told he had been banned from the premises and asked to leave.

The court heard the offence put Hayden in breach of a conditional charge he got on March 10 for criminal damage.

Paul Hedley-Saunders, defending, said: “The defendant got angry because he thought he was unjustly banned from the store.”

It was heard Hayden was banned on suspicion of shoplifting. Mr Hedley-Saunders said Hayden was searched but no stolen items were found.

He was charged with criminal damage after creating graffiti at a car park in November 2014, Mr Hedley-Saunders said.

Magistrates gave Hayden an 18 month conditional discharge for the public disorder and breach offences.

Chairman of the bench Howard Mundin said: “Even though you have been in breach of the conditional discharge we are going to give you a lengthy conditional discharge in the hope that it will keep you aware of your responsibilities.

“The next court is unlikely to offer a conditional discharge again so for the next 18 months ensure your behaviour is exemplary.”

Hayden was ordered to pay £150 criminal court charge, £85 prosecution costs and £15 victim surcharge.
