A Crawley mother has been given a conditional discharge for slapping a woman in an argument over a dog.

Samantha George, 30, of Shipley Road, Ifield, pleaded guilty to one count of assault by beating at Crawley Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday August 5).

Melanie Wotton, prosecuting, said a number of people saw George assault the woman at Langley Green Farm in January. JPs heard they both kept horses at the farm.

She said: “Both were probably swearing at each other however it culminated with Miss George punching [the woman] in the face causing some reddening.”

Iain Starke, defending, said the women were arguing over the victim’s boyfriend’s dog.

Mr Starke said the dog had a near miss with one of George’s children when running off its lead.

He said: “She was very concerned about that and she had had a number of words with [the woman] about the dog.”

Mr Starke said: “Miss George simply says that she lost it.

“She hit [the woman] or slapped her once to the face, as soon as she did that she realised what she had done was wrong - in my submission it was an impulsive act.”

The court heard George suffered from personal problems which caused her trauma.

It was heard she had no previous convictions. She was taking steps to avoid contact with the woman.

JPs read character references from her family and a neighbour.

The chair of the bench said they showed she had ‘done a lot of good’ in the community. She said: “We are inclined to think it was an impulsive act and out of character.”

George was given an 18 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 costs and £15 victim surcharge.
