East Grinstead nurse racially abused and punched in the face in ‘despicable attack’

An East Grinstead nurse was punched and racially abused in an unprovoked attack as she was leaving work, police said.

Inspector Darren Taylor of Mid Sussex Police said the incident happened around 6.30pm on Monday, July 6 near the Homebase roundabout on the A22 London Road.

He added that police are treating the incident, which involved two males on a motorbike, as a racially motivated assault.

Inspector Taylor said one of the males on the bike punched the nurse in the face and arm but she didn’t sustain serious injuries. One of the males also ‘racially abused’ the nurse before the bike sped off.

He added: “This was an unprovoked attack on a defenceless member of the public.

“It was a despicable, unprovoked assault on a lady who was a nurse who works tirelessly to help others.

“What he said was totally despicable and unacceptable.”

Inspector Taylor said anyone with information about the incident should ring 101 with CAD 0387 07/07.
