Here are some of the most high profile sentencings, from late July through August, including a bomb hoax in Hailsham, an armed robbery with a meat cleaver and some harrowing accounts of sexual assaults made public by their extremely courageous victims. All information is from our reporters attending court in person or official Sussex Police spokesmen.
1. Jamie Welch
Jamie Welch, of St Georges Road in Hastings, was jailed for three and a half years on August 17 having pleaded guilty to causing three girls to engage, separately, in online sexual activity and to disclosing a private sexual photograph of one without her consent. The girls were between 12 and 15 years old. He had targeted them on Facebook by pretending to be a 'good looking 15-year-old boy', before threatening to publicise the sexual images if his victims did not meet his demands. Police said one of the children attempted suicide while another said she felt unable to leave her home alone. Welch, 31, was placed on the sex offenders register. SUS-200109-142354001
2. Neil Turner
On August 5, Neil Turner, 67, of Pevensey Gardens in Worthing, was jailed for 28 months after admitting to assaults on six young boys and an adult with learning disabilities. The former Shoreham College teacher and choirmaster's crimes spanned more than 30 years and mainly involved inviting his victims back to his flat where he would rub their feet and indulge his self-confessed foot fetish. His conviction follows a previous jail term for historic child sex offences. His latest victims came forward after Turner was jailed in 2017 for similar offences. Photo: Sussex Police
