A man has been taken to hospital with head injuries and broken ribs police believe were caused by a hammer.

Sussex Police was called to The Haven Centre in Hophurst Lane, Crawley Down, just before 4pm on Tuesday (June 16) after a fight had taken place in a car park.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of robbery.

A police spokesman said the man, 30, from East Grinstead, was taken to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill.

His mobile phone and car keys had been stolen. He was kept in hospital overnight but his condition was not assessed as life threatening.

The spokesman said: “Shortly afterwards police arrested an 18-year old man from Copthorne Common and a 22-year old Crawley man, at their addresses, on suspicion of robbery. They are currently in custody for interview and further enquiries. “The investigation is at an early stage and the full circumstances are not yet clear, but it is believed that the people involved were known to each other.”
