A man has been jailed after he racially abused a fast food store manager and a security guard in Crawley in June.

Patrick Maughan, 65, racially and religiously abused the manager of McDonald’s inside the restaurant in Haslett Avenue West at 7pm on June 18.

The store manager asked the Sri Lankan security guard to wait outside for the police.

While he was waiting, Maughan left McDonald’s and racially abused the security guard, a spokesperson for Sussex Police said..

Maughan was arrested on July 31 and charged with two counts of racially and religiously aggravated intentional harassment.

Maughan, of Homer Road, Solihull, West Midlands appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday September 2 and pleaded guilty to both offences.

He was sentenced to 12 weeks imprisonment and was also ordered to pay £180 costs and £80 victim surcharge.

Sussex Police’s hate crime sergeant, Peter Allan said: “I am pleased that the victims in this case reported the abuse they had received from Patrick Maughan to the police.

“Both men were simply doing their job in the hospitality industry when they were subjected to very personal and inflammatory abuse.

“Sussex Police will always take robust action in such cases, and I am glad that the court imposed a sentence that I hope will encourage other victims to come forward and report cases to us and deter perpetrators from such behaviour.

“You can report hate crime by calling Sussex Police on 101, or 999 in an emergency. You can also report online via our website www.sussex.police.uk”
