Sentencing, Judge Anthony Scott-Gall called it a ‘shabby enterprise’. “The plan, obviously, was that the pizzas were not to be paid for, and he was bashed in the head,” he said. “The pizzas were gathered up and consumed in a nearby house.”

However, he said each of them had made ‘genuine progress’ at turning their lives around - neither has been in trouble in the year and a half since the incident.

Each was given a two year jail sentence, suspended for two years, with a six month curfew for Vincent and a high intensity specified activity requirement for Underwood.

Beverley Cherrill, representing Vincent, said he had begun to reform after he started receiving support from Ark, a Worthing-based charity for the homeless. She said he is now free of alcohol and illegal drugs.

The court was told that Underwood has also made great progress, and has begun volunteering to help at Ark.
