Police appeal after nine people injured in M23 crash

Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway on the M23 at around midday today (Sunday July 19).

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said two children were injured in the crash near Gatwick Airport.

Six people have been taken to hospital, said Surrey Police.

One of the four people who were taken to St George’s Hospital in London had sustained serious injuries.

Two people were taken to East Surrey Hospital with minor injuries.

The two lanes which were closed on the northbound carriageway have reopened. Congestion is reported at Junction 10 (Crawley), the roads around Gatwick and Eastbourne Road in Newchapel.

Tailbacks stretched to four miles.

A police spokesman said: “Five vehicles were involved including a silver BMW, blue Ford Focus estate, grey Ford Focus, a black Mercedes and a black Jaguar car.

“A total of nine casualties have been reported. Eight casualties are currently believed to have minor injuries, two of which have been taken to East Surrey Hospital and three of which have been taken to St Georges Hospital, Tooting.

“One casualty currently believed to have serious injuries has also been taken to St Georges Hospital.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or the events surrounding it is urged to contact Surrey Police quoting reference P15187826”
