Police say that the catalytic converters are targeted by criminals because of high-value precious metals contained within them.

A spokesman said: “It only takes a few minutes to remove a catalytic converter but they are expensive to replace.”

As well as a number of thefts in Horsham over the past week, the spokesman said: “This is happening all over the UK and cars have been targeted in many areas including public car parks, hospital and supermarket car parks or at car dealerships or garages.

“The vehicles targeted are often hybrid models or vehicles which have high ground clearance and offer easy access to the converter.

“Please report any suspicious activity around vehicles, such as someone underneath a car or lifting a vehicle up.”

He said an alarm could be fitted to vehicles that activates if it’s tilted or shaken and protective covers could be fitted.

He added: “If you witness suspicious activity, don’t approach the suspects. Take note of the suspect’s vehicle registration, only if it’s safe to do so.

“You can report this by calling 101 or online or in an emergency always call 999.”
