Inspector Darren Taylor of Mid Sussex Police said the Silent Soldier monument by Adastra Park in Hassocks had one of its legs smashed off in a ‘despicable’ act of vandalism.

He added: “It’s just mindless and unacceptable criminal damage.

“Especially to a monument that’s there to remember the brave men and woman that have given up such sacrifices for us.”

But in a move which Darren said has ‘warmed his heart’ the community has rallied round to fund a repair to the monument.

Darren added: “We have had so many kind hearted and generous people contact us by Twitter and email offering donations for the damaged Silent Soldier in Hassocks.

“I have emailed the Parish Clerk this morning [July 23] and asked if they would be open to accepting donations for the repairs.

“It’s really nice. It restores your faith in human kindness.

“It’s a massive positive from a negative.”
