Officers say they have had several incidents reported recently of lambs being injured or killed by dogs and sheep being chased.

A spokesman said: “There are no excuses for a dog out of control in rural areas – each and every dog, no matter how calm and obedient it usually is, must always be retained on a lead anywhere around land which has or may have livestock on it.”

Other incidents reported to police include people trespassing onto farmland and ‘occasionally being obstructive when asked to return to the footpath.’

The spokesman said: “Farmland is private land that, thanks to our excellent network of Public Rights of Way, people are allowed to visit.

“While passing through it is great to enjoy the nature, the views, the exercise and the fresh air – but it is necessary and correct to remain firmly within the often-narrow bounds of those Public Rights of Way.”

Police say that there have also seen a rise in Quad bikes being stolen - with six taken in the last week.
