Daughter runs in memory of mum

Youngest daughter Debby, 25, will be running on April 22 for the British Heart Foundation.

Debby said: “I decided to take part because I lost my mum from heart disease in October last year.

“She was only 62 and was very unexpected after a minor stent operation that she was recovering from.

”From that day our lives have changed forever and I want to do anything I can to prevent this from happening to anyone else’s mum or other family member or friend.

“I’ve already achieved my initial pledge of £2,000 but I’d love to get even more.

Val’s widower, Godfrey Newman, Horsham district councillor for Forest, recently told a full council meeting of his daughter’s tribute.

He also announced East Surrey Hospital would be dedicating its Simulation Suite, used for improving doctors’ skills, in Val’s name with an unveiling on Monday March 26.

“Val was the ultimate carer who did not differentiate between anyone, no matter what their circumstances or conditions may have been,” he said.

“She affected the lives of thousands of people during her career whether as Dr Newman and helping women in labour with epidurals, anaesthetising for operations, including children for their tonsils, adenoids and grommets or as their GP and as Mrs Newman, the mum whose girls attended Heron Way School and later Millais and then three daughters and one son at Collyer’s.

“Val was to become a governor at Heron Way and chairman of governors of Millais.

“She had started mentoring young people within the Horsham parish churches and was due to start working with Horsham Matters in a similar role.”
