Dean gets up a head of steam in the greenhouse

WHAT with the exercise bike and terrapin pond, there's not much space left in Dean Baker's greenhouse for usual features such as tomato plants and cacti.

No, the 41-year-old is not conducting some bizarre cloning experiment, but preparing for an equally mind-boggling personal challenge.

Next April Dean, of Alford Way, will take part in a 150-mile, 6-day marathon in the Sahara Desert to raise funds for a new academic block and community theatre for St Mary's Special School, where he works as swimming pool coordinator.

And he's training in his greenhouse to simulate the humid and sweltering conditions he will face during the event known as the Toughest Footrace on Earth.

Superfit Dean said: "It's the only way I can think of to recreate that heat and get used to the fluid loss."

He spends two hours a day on the bike in temperatures of 120f, watched by the family terrapin from his home in the corner of the greenhouse.

The father of two also runs some 30 miles a week which will build to nearer 100 come winter. He carries a four kilo pack and weights on his ankles to build up strength.

During the race Dean will be expected to carry all his food and equipment on his back, minus his tent and an incredible nine litres of water a day.

Dean added: "I'll be running about eight hours a day approaching the race so my wife Julie won't be seeing much of me. She's been an absolute star and tolerates me very patiently."

He's no stranger to big challenges and has ran several marathons. Dean also enjoys adventure sports such as canoeing and rock climbing.

Anyone interested in sponsoring him is asked to call 739069 or send donations to the Wrestwood Road school made payable to the St Mary's Wrestwood Trust.
