Drive to find best idea for new Bognor logo

A new logo could be used to promote Bognor Regis.

Town councillors have launched a competition to find a new design to improve the marketing of Bognor.

They want all young designers to submit their ideas. Letters have been sent to all secondary schools and colleges in the area to generate interest in the competition.

All the entries will be on display in the town this summer and on the Observer's website.

The winner will receive a free pass for two people to enjoy unlimited films at the Picturedrome Cinema, thanks to the Picturedrome Electric Theatre Co Ltd.

They will also enjoy the kudos of seeing their design used to promote Bognor.

The town council also hopes that the modern logo could be adopted by other organisations, such as social groups or councils, to promote a distinct brand for the town.

Currently, the town council uses the official Bognor Regis crest (pictured left) on all letterheads and correspondence as well as banners, leaflets and posters.

Paul Beckerson, the council's projects and IT officer, said: "However, the council feels that a different logo should be used on such material as banners, leaflefts and brochures promoting the events or the town in general.

"The crest will still be used on council correspondence and for formal civic events."

The current civic arms were granted on April 10, 1935. They show a gold pile surrounded by a blue field to suggest sand and sea.

A Saxon crown suggests the Saxon origin of the town and the royally- granted title of Regis.

Three martlets along the top of the shield depict the county bird.

The crest repeats the Saxon crown in between two blue seagull wings to denote Bognor's location as a seaside town. Underneath the crest is the phrase 'To Excel'.

The logo competition's closing date is May 15. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Paul Beckerson, the town council's projects and IT officer, on 01243 825535 or email him for a copy of the design brief.
