Dullest August

Awful August weather left Bognor Regis under a cloud.

The month was the dullest August for 31 years. Even then, its 169.3 hours of sunshine only just beat the 165.4 hours recorded in 1977. The sunniest day was the 23rd with 12.6 hours.

Along with the lack of sun came a mass of grey skies and more rain than usual.

The rainfall total of 57.8mm was well above the 49.63mm seasonal average but much less than the amount endured two years ago.

The wettest period was overnight on the 11th/12th when 11.4mm of rain was recorded. Added to this dismal combination was a series of strong and gale force, mainly westerly winds.

This mixture produced the coolest August since 1992's mean maximum temperature of 19.2C with an average of 19.8C. This was well below the 20.1C seasonal average.

But the mean minimum temperature at night was way above the expected level at 15.1C against 13.6C.

Residents and visitors had to wait until the 30th for the warmest day at 23C/73.4F. The coldest was a week earlier with a grass temperature of just 6.7C.
