Eco-friendly coffins for pets

BEXHILL'S eco-friendly coffin maker, Dennis Marshall, is adding another creative idea to his repertoire, by designing and making a range of special paper maché coffins for pets.

Dennis said the idea and plan for the pet coffins was formulated after he had a meeting with local resident Gi Gi Griffiths who works at the University of the Arts in London.

Following the meeting, Dennis said he became aware of just how special pets are to people when he and GI Gi did a fact finding mission and visited pet cemeteries.

He said: "It was very emotional to see the memorials people have for their pets, and I thought the idea of making a paper mach coffin for them was wonderful."

The design and shape of the coffins came about when Dennis received a gift in a hexagonal shaped box which gave him the inspiration he was looking for, and he subsequently based his latest design around that shape.

Dennis is already making a name for himself with his100% eco-friendly coffins '“ which are made out of recyclable material - for humans, and he said this latest imaginative addition to his range will not only be environmentally friendly but will also be reasonably priced.

He said: "The prices of wooden coffins for pets, is phenomenal. The most expensive one we will produce will cost 217, and that will be for a large dog like a Rottweiler or Doberman."

Dennis is also actively working on a paper mach catamaran in conjunction with local charity 'Bedfelloes.'

They are hoping that the catamaran will be completed in time for Cowes week in August when they are hoping to sail the boat and raise funds for the Conquest hospitals ITU. However, despite receiving a generous donation equating to 800 of glue for the project from German company Wurth, Dennis said unless more volunteers come forward to help build the boat, the catamaran won't be completed in time.

He said: "We urgently need to hear from boat building volunteers who are willing to donate a few hours to support this important project."
