Eco town looms nearer for Ford

A FURTHER 5,000 homes could be forced on Arun after Ford was shortlisted as a possible location for an eco-town last week. The Department of Communities and Local Government announced 15 locations, last Thursday, which will now go through the next stage of consultation.

The news was greeted by a mixture of dismay and support.

Two proposals, one from the Ford Enterprise Hub and the other from the Ford Airfield Vision Group for the former Ford Airfield site, have been submitted.

Eco-town numbers, when added to possible numbers for the South East Plan could mean more than 16,000 new homes for Arun District.

Local MPs Nick Herbert and Nick Gibb have vowed to continue the fight against an eco-town at Ford following the Government's announcement.

Mr Herbert, Arundel and South Downs MP, said: "This is a new town in disguise. There's nothing 'eco' about building 5,000 houses on a green field site. We simply don't have the infrastructure to support additional housing on this scale."
