Elderly ‘have been crying’ as they sign petition

ELDERLY people have been seen crying in the Age UK shop in Horsham as they sign a petition calling on the government to fix the care system.

Eileen Brumby, the manager of the charity shop in the Carfax, said that they have been inundated with signatures for their campaign to trigger a debate in Parliament and show the government how important the issue of social care is.

Eileen has noticed that this is a subject very close to people’s hearts. She said: “I have seen people signing that petition and crying”.

Age UK aims to gain 100,000 signatures to help get one step closer to making sure that old people get the care they need.

Since the petition started a week ago more than 900 people have signed, often citing their own personal reasons.

“The elderly know what it is like and they know how the campaign will help. We have heard some terrible stories from customers.

“The current adult social care system in England is in financial crisis and needs urgent lasting reform. Many of those who need help and support aren’t getting it, while others find themselves having to sell their homes in order to pay for the support they need.”

After hearing many horror stories about social care from Horsham residents, Eileen takes the subject of social care very seriously.

“It’s a serious business growing old. If you’re well, growing old is lovely but if your not, it’s a different story. Some customers come in here every day because they are lonely and as far as I’m concerned, if we cannot send them out with a smile we’re not doing our job.”
