The men had been cruising down the River Arun waterway last night when they came into difficulties close to Amberley, near Arundel.

A lifeboat team from the RNLI lifeboat station in Littlehampton were called to rescue the party and towed their vessel back to safety, to the Littlehampton Marina where the men were met by members of the coastguard and Sussex Police.

Speaking on Facebook, a coastguard spokesman said: “Strong advice was given about operating a vessel whilst intoxicated. The vessel had enough lifejackets for everyone onboard, but none were being worn, and a radio, which didn’t work due to water damage so further advice was given.

“Once all persons were back on land we stood down and the stags continued their night safe and well.”

Nick White, operations manager at the RNLI, has since urged other river users to take enjoy the attraction – but safely.

“It’s always important to respect the water,” he said. “That our mantra.”

He advised people to be careful when they had out on the water, urging them to make sure the weather conditions are safe.
