We provided a slideshow showing the fountain’s transformation into the current feature and asked for opinions.

One reader said: “I am assuming that it is not quite finished. The stone base needs a jet wash to refresh it and the sticky bit where the plaque was needs a tidy up. Maybe both have been done now; I haven’t seen it with the Heras fencing down. Do I like it? I would have preferred something lower to open up the views.”

Another added: “I’m assuming that this isn’t the long term plan for the area. My concern is that HDC have used rootballed trees - something that’s usually done in the dormant season, also the amount of trees to the root run is also a great concern. It’s better than what was there before but not really a monument to Shelley...”

On our Facebook page comments were very mixed, with one reader saying: “I for one like the trees, much nicer to have something natural and a vast improvement.”

However, others pointed out: “Are all the moaners happy now... you’ve got some trees now instead!!! Great...!!!” and “The excitement is overwhelming. How imaginative.”
