WSG columnist in Happy List

NATURE writer and WSG columnist Richard Williamson has been named as one of the 100 people who make Britain a better, more caring and contented nation in the Independent on Sunday Happy List 2009.

The List is intended to act as a counterweight to Rich Lists, Power Lists and Celebrity Lists that worship the moneyed and famous.

It celebrates people who enhance the lives of others in an acquisitive society where there is a need for values other than materialism.

Richard is one of the WSG's country life columnists, much loved for his outstanding writing about nature. Son of Henry Williamson, of Tarka the Otter fame, he was for many years warden of Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve in West Sussex, site of the world's largest yew forest. His column helps readers appreciate their surroundings more.

He said on Monday: "I am amazed I have been included in this list, but very glad if my writing helps other people get out there and enjoy wildlife and nature and see how superb life can be.

"Since the age of five, I have been fascinated by everything from birds and butterflies to the sky and leaves. I've always had an overriding interest in life and nature, because it is so diverse. People often become too inward looking and melancholy when all they need to do to be happier is to look around them.

"I am delighted to bring the world of nature to others. It is a panacea and a wonderful way to overcome stress."

Apart from his nature writing, he has written two books about two separate women with traumatic problems in their lives and how they overcome the problems.

"I hope on the back of this, I might get them published," he said.

See his column in the West Sussex Gazette every Wednesday.
