Exhibitors rise to challenge

Two new trophies were available for exhibitors at Felpham and Middleton Horticultural Society's latest spring show.

The cups were the Patsy Foster Trophy for the best orchid in show and the Ball Trophy for the best exhibit in floral art presented by Ball and Co (Felpham) Ltd accountants.

The spring show, held at St Mary's Centre, presents a big challenge for exhibitors wondering if the daffodils will still be in flower and the tulips ready.

Eight new individuals took part in this year's occasion.

Society chairman Rhonda Ball said: 'Exhibitors always manage to rise to this challenge and, as usual, the exhibits showed how well they have succeeded.

'Of course, there were other spring floral exhibits. These created a wealth of different colours and shapes with the spring shrubs, orchids, camellias, pansies, polyanthus, hyacinths, hellebores and alpines, not to mention the herbs, vegetables and fruit.'

Lovely displays of floral art added to the spectacle.

The children's section included decorated Easter eggs and Easter bonnets, miniature gardens, flapjack, iced cup cakes and decorated book covers. These exhibits were divided into two age groups.

Adult handicrafts included knitting, crochet, embroidered pictures and a cushion, paintings, Easter cards and photography.

The cookery section had shortbread, scones, decorated Easter cake, marmalades and a special section for men.

The numerous visitors had the chance to enjoy refreshments while they sat down to enjoy the panorama of the exhibits.

Plant and cake sales, as well as a tombola and raffle, completed the event.

The society's next meeting will be held at St Mary's Centre at 7.30pm on April 22. Richard Thornton will give a talk with slides on '˜Wisley throughout the year'.
