Cllr Marion Ayling was in the same class at Pound Hill Junior School as Maria Woodhead, who died after what is believed to be a gas canister or boiler exploded in her home in Banks Road, Pound Hill.

Cllr Ayling (Lab, Bewbush) and Maria made contact with each other a few months ago via Facebook.

She said: “I was sad to hear what happened to her. What a terrible thing to happen to someone so young.

“It makes you think it could happen to you.”
