A related note states that our Rector, Richard Barron, was anything but barren when it came to the Flower Show at Pett. After what was, for him, a very quiet show on his Fairlight home patch, the away fixture at Pett had Richard celebrating four trophies and nine class first places!

TODAY, AND NEXT WEEK, AT MOPPs: Today, Friday August 5, organist Les Stannard will be entertaining the group, and then there’ll be lasagne and salad followed by sticky toffee pudding.

Next Friday, August 12, is Produce Day, as well as being a day for toe-nail help. Lunch will then be roast pork with apple sauce and stuffing, along with angel delight and summer fruits for pud.

MIRROR, MIRROR, ON THE WALL: Who is the Fair(f)est of them all? Well, it has to be Jennifer Annetts, overall organiser of Fairfest since its inception in 2010, but not on her own, as she has a strong and willing committee, as well as countless further workers and enthusiasts setting bales of straw, marshalling traffic, cooking endless burgers and hot-dogs, manning stalls and clearing up the day after all is said and done.

Last Sunday was the fourth Fairfest, a fact which was reflected by the high number of stalls, the vast number of classic cars (was it really 70?), the vastness of the main marquee and the sheer multiplicity of things to see or participate in, comprehensively covering most of Wood Field with stuff and visitors. An enormous plus factor for a successful day came from the weather, which was very warm without being scorching, predominantly dry and relatively wind-free, unusual when it can blow Force 6 or 7 on Wood Field while the rest of the world has a flat calm. The numbers attending appeared higher than I can ever remember them, and all enjoyed the varied displays in the Grand Ring, and the live music until late.

Most of the Wood Field Recreation ground was cleared on the morning of the next day, and there were some items of lost property found on the site a wheel chair, a beige jacket and a pair of sunglasses. If any of the above items belong to you, they have been stored in the Activate Hut, so please contact Wendy Hatch at [email protected] to arrange collection.

GARDENING CLUB: Last Monday, members of Fairlight Gardening Club were treated to an informative and very entertaining talk by regular speaker, Jacqui Aviolet. Jacqui is extremely knowledgeable and although asters were the main subject of her presentation, her talk was not limited to just asters, as she gave extensive advice on taking cuttings on other plants, particularly buddleias. She was kind enough to donate several plants to the Circle and the vase of buddleias that she brought along are going to be propagated by show winner Anne Cruttenden for later planting.

A very early but necessary reminder for Club members, in two months time, on Monday, October 3, the club will be returning to Fairlight Hall for a tour of the garden and afternoon tea. So, if you intend to go, please contact Karen Draper on 814154 as the hall will need to know numbers beforehand.

HEARING DOGS FOR DEAF PEOPLE: Sally Watson, a great standard bearer for the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People organisation, sends many grateful thanks to all the guests and helpers and dogs who attended the Garden Party fundraiser a couple of weeks ago on Thursday. A perfect afternoon was enjoyed by all including, presumably, all dogs present, and the brilliant sum of £426 that’s all of four barks, two growls and six yaps, was raised. Unfortunately, when this was a forthcoming event, it somehow passed by Village Voice unnoticed, and this column was unable to add a few pounds to the final kitty. (Can cash for a dog based objective go into a kitty?
