Church matters: This Sunday we have a 10.30 am service of Holy Communion at St Andrew’s. A little later in the day, at 6 pm, there will be Evening Prayer at St Peter’s. Paul and Vanessa Reid report that there have been record takings from the tower this summer. All the volunteers who have helped raise what amounted to more than £1,000, the best result ever, are to be thanked most sincerely.

Are you wistful tonight?: Don’t be wistful, be whist-full instead on this, the second of the Bowls Club’s winter series of fortnightly Whist Drives. It’s all happening at the village hall, so be there at 6.30 for the 7 pm start. Sylvia and Roger Taylor have more details should you need them, and they’re on 813518

FRA Quiz Night: Tomorrow, Saturday October 18, in the village hall from 7.30 to 10.30 pm, it’s the Residents Association’s Quiz Night. There will be a sandwich buffet, and do-it-yourself drinks – you take your own and your own glasses, too. Tickets are £6 each, and are obtainable from the Post Office. If you have any questions, perhaps you should be helping run the show, or give Trevor Lewing a ring on 812340.

Fairlight Preservation Trust: The Annual General Meeting of the Trust will be held in the small hall of the Village Hall on Sunday, October 19 at 2.30 pm. The Trust’s Officers are hoping that, by this date, they may have an indication from the Environment Agency with regard to the possible funding of the project to fill the gap between the two berms. Non-members are very welcome to attend the meeting but are not entitled to vote. Currently, the subscription rate is £10.00, which covers a member for three years, or £5.00 for one year. Associated membership rates are £5.00 for three years or £2.50 for one year, though this membership does not confer any voting rights. If you have never attended a Trust meeting, you really should consider doing so. Their track record on behalf of everyone in the village is considerable, and the point is that they strive, continually, for all of us in Fairlight.

Tuesday Ladies Club: At their meeting on Tuesday next, October 21, their speaker will be John Pulfer, who will be talking about the Royal British Legion. John, who is the RBL Appeals Organiser for our area, is also very well known locally for his sterling work as a Trustee and principal Fund Raiser for the Pett Level Rescue Boat. The afternoon’s fun commences at 2.15 pm, and there’ll be tea and cakes too. As usual, guests and visitors are welcome (on payment of a small fee) and this welcome extends to the fellas.

Fairlight Trefoil Guild: The Guild’s October meeting is on Wednesday next, October 22, in St Peter’s from 10.00 am to 12 noon. The subject will be Witches, Ghosts, and Spiders, all in a riot of Halloween Fun.

Speaker’s Corner: Formerly, as you will know by now, the Literary Society, but under their new name they continue their programme of fortnightly talks on Wednesday next, October 22 with Chris McCooey their guest speaker covering Scandals - Sensational, Salacious and Sad. The afternoon begins at 2.30 pm. Guests are welcome. There are pre-read books to purchase.

Quiz Night at the Cove: On a busy day for events in the village, Wednesday, October 22, is also the date of the latest in The Cove’s series of pub quizzes. Exercise your little grey cells (and lubricate them, too) all starting at 8.00 pm

A Day trip to Ypres: Bookings started some time ago now, and at last it’s all set to go off on a day trip to Ypres this coming Thursday, October 23. The coach leaves the Circle at 7.00 am and returns at 10.00 pm, with the promise of an interesting and moving experience in between. This has all been arranged by the Wine and Social Club.

The Floral Club: meets on Thursday, October 23 at 2.30 pm in the village hall. And this month it’s a return to a demonstration afternoon with, on this occasion, Gill Sadler doing the honours with a display entitled ‘Flower and Glory’. As usual, there’ll be tea and cake, plus a sales table for all your flower arranging requirements.

Fairlight Players: A little bit earlier than usual, tickets for the Players’ forthcoming production – of Terence Rattigan’s Separate Tables, which runs from Thursday 6 to Saturday 8 November – are on sale now at the Post Office. Still at only £6, a price few other groups can contemplate. If you have never seen the Players, give them a go this time, in a classic 50s drama, a thought-provoking change from frothy farce.

Activate Cycle Course: All the youngsters taking part achieved their level 2 qualification, which meant that they had to ride for several hours on the roads. It made Wendy Hatch realise, as a driver, that all drivers need to be patient and allow cyclists the time they require to manoeuvre safely. The whole very successful initiative was generously supported by the Fairlight Residents Association, particularly welcome as an expected source of funds failed to materialise.

MOPPs, this week and next: Today, Friday, October 17, the entertainment will be by the Village Choir with, appropriately for autumn, a programme that will include some of their summer items together with a first look at, or rather listen to, some of their new sea-themed songs. And after that, everyone will be ready for liver and bacon followed by fruit crumble. Next Friday, October 24, it will be the ever-popular Keith Osbourne with Music for Health, after which your lunch will be fish pie, then apple bakewell. Amazingly, MOPPs has some vacancies for those who would like to be enjoying the fun and the food every Friday, accompanied as it all is by the companionship and togetherness. The £5 cost is very reasonable and, what is more, transport can be arranged (for £2) if you would find it difficult to get to the village hall.
