Polegate councillor Roy Martin could not see why the property could not be brought up to modern day standards.

Care at Gilda Crescent includes 20 respite care places, eight living-at-home places, eight nurse assessment places and two long term residents.

A ten-place day service is also available.

Norman Baker MP said: 'I am most concerned to hear about this threat to the services to my constituents.

'I have asked for an urgent meeting with the director carrying out the review to explore the alternative solution put forward by my constituents.'

A spokeswoman for the council said no decisions have been made about the future of the care facilities.

She added: 'We are in consultation with staff, carers, users and other stakeholders until August 24.

'This means we are listening carefully to what these people have to say and their views will be submitted to County Council Cabinet with the final review report.'
