First Syrian refugee families move into the county

But officials are not saying exactly where the families are to give them privacy and time to resettle.

Crawley Borough Council has pledged to allocate houses for 10 of the refugee families and said back in March that it expected them to arrive ‘within weeks.’

The refugees are among 20,000 Syrian refugees who will be resettled across the UK following a commitment given by Prime Minister David Cameron.

West Sussex County Council, alongside its partners in district and borough councils and the health service, has offered support for one family - or four people - per month for the duration of the scheme.

A spokesperson said: “We have welcomed our first two Syrian refugee families as part of the UK’s Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme. The families have been spending their first few weeks settling in.

“We are working closely with them as they embark on their new life in West Sussex and are making sure they get everything they are entitled to and link them up with key workers who will help them.”

As well as Crawley Council’s promise to house 10 families, Horsham District Council has offered homes to another 10 families and Mid Sussex District Council has said it will find homes for an unspecified number.
