Fitting tribute to lifeboat supporters

Betty and Thomas Moore, of Selsey, made a large donation to the RNLI Selsey lifeboat team in their will.

Both of them had sailed for more than half a decade.

Now, in their memory, the Selsey crew will officially name their new D-class inshore lifeboat the Betty and Thomas Moore.

"They will be foremost in the thoughts of the volunteer crew when the new lifeboat in their name is officially placed on service," said Sally Hilton, regional fund-raising manager for the RNLI.

"The RNLI is very grateful indeed to Mr and Mrs Moore for their kindness and for recognising the RNLI in their will and to everyone else whose donations have made this new lifeboat possible."

Subject to operational requirements, there will be a launch of the new lifeboat after the ceremony.

The event will take place on Saturday at the Selsey lifeboat station at Kingsway, Selsey.

Clive Cockayne, lifeboat operations manager at Selsey RNLI lifeboat station, said: "The new Betty and Thomas Moore is both faster and better equipped than our previous inshore lifeboat.

"It has a top speed of 25 knots (30mph), a range of three hours at maximum speed, better radio and navigation equipment enabling crews to respond more quickly to search-and-rescue operations."
