Flags flying at half mast in respect of Shoreham Airshow crash victims

A Hawker Hunter jet crashed into the busy A27, resulting in a likely 11 deaths, but police fear this number could rise to 20.

The A27 remains closed while an investigation of the crash site takes place, and three of the victims have so far been named as Worthing United Football Club players Matt Grimstone and Jacob Schilt, and Littlehampton man Matt Jones.

Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, tweeted: “Flags are flying at half mast today at WSCC in respect of those who tragically lost their lives at Shoreham on Saturday.”

Earlier she said: “Our thoughts continue to be with those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy and with those who have been injured. It is hard to imagine how traumatic it must have been for emergency crews faced with this appalling scene.

“I can only pay tribute to their incredible bravery and professionalism. I also want to offer my heartfelt thanks to health workers who fought to save lives and help the injured and our own social service’s team who have provided invaluable support to the affected families.

“The county council and its partners will continue to offer as much support to all those affected by this terrible tragedy for as long as needed.

“There will be considerable work for us to do as a county council for the near future but this will not be at the expense of the first class services we provide West Sussex residents.”
