FLOODING THREAT TO HUNDREDS OF HOMES

UNLESS millions of pounds are spent on flood defences, hundreds of families in homes on the coast from Littlehampton to Shoreham could face devastating damage, say officials.

The Environment Agency says that as many as 5,000 homes between the River Arun and River Adur are at risk, including many new properties along Littlehampton's east bank, and the new Ropetackle development at Shoreham.

The agency itself had failed to raise any objections originally to either the east bank development or the striking new complex at Ropetackle because the flood-risk guidelines on which they worked were less stringent at the time.

Last October, the guidelines were tightened by the Government, at a time when both schemes were virtually finished. An agency spokeswoman has admitted that if either plans came up for consideration today, the agency would object to them.
