Founder’s Day at Battle Abbey

In a change to recent years the weather was seasonal and rainy as former pupils, current parents and guests made their way to St Mary’s Church for the service.

The school saw the return of new and old students alike, from newly arrived year sevens, to alumni from decades past.

This year saw the return of former pupil, and guest speaker, Donna Smith, who now works for charity group 3VA, a group which provides support for voluntary and community organisations throughout Sussex.

She is also a member of the schools former pupils association (BAFPA).

Donna left Battle Abbey School in 1987 and she spoke about that certain Battle Abbey confidence that stays with you throughout your life and the feeling of being part of the Battle Abbey family.

The service also included ‘Anthem for the Abbey’, a piece specifically written to celebrate the Schools Centenary year in 2012, and meditations on the school by current pupil and School Guardian; Phoebe Crane, who spoke of her 15 years at Battle Abbey School, all the way from nursery through to School Guardian.

There were also readings from current Battle Abbey pupils Greg Melville and Robbie Ellis.

Luckily the Abbot’s Hall ceiling had been completed ahead of schedule and the scaffolding was down in time for the guests to enjoy tea coffee and cake on the congregation’s return to the Abbey.

Some former pupils took the opportunity for a tour of the school and boarding accommodation, and no doubt a trip down memory lane, ably guided by the current boarders and sixth formers.
