Crawley Concordia Singers raised more than £40 by singing carols at Crawley Garden Centre, in Copthorne Road, Pound Hill, on Saturday (December 7).

And workers at UK Power Networks have planned a fundraising day at the company’s office in Hazelwick Avenue on Friday (December 13), with a best Christmas jumper contest, bake-off, cake sale, Christmas quiz and dress down day.

Graduate engineer, Dimitar Georgiev, the driving force behind the fundraising event, said: “This is an urgent appeal because there is a crisis out there. People have been affected through no fault of their own. They have lost families, homes and they have to rebuild their lives from scratch. Millions have been affected. I feel strongly that those of us who can help should do so.”

More than 2,000 people died when Typhoon Haiyan swept through the Philippines on November 8, with winds gusting up to 270km/h.

Parts of the islands were flattened, leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless.

Concordia Singers begin rehearsals for their next concert on Thursday January 16 at Crawley URC, Worth Park Avenue, Pound Hill, and new members are welcome to attend.

Rehearsals take place every Thursday evening during term time under their musical director Ian Assersohn.

The concert at St Wilfrid’s School, Old Horsham Road, Crawley, will be held on Saturday April 5 and features Joseph Haydn’s Little Organ Mass and Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light Requiem.

Concordia Singers have been performing for more than half a century. Choir publicity officer Donna Oxley said: “We are always on the lookout for new members so if you enjoy singing, why not come along and try it out for yourself.

“There is no audition and you won’t be tested in any way. We welcome people with a friendly, informal atmosphere.”
