The pictures were published in the Observer in March of that year, when the cash raised by this gang of weird and wonderful people was added to the £20million raised all over the country.

Among those who took part were Rachel Frisby, of Thomas Bennett School, who raised £30 by carrying around a plate of cold beans all day – which she then had to eat.

Mike Wakefield and Kevin Webber put on very fetching frocks when they joined Trisha Isaacs and Guy Omidge on a Virgin stall in Queens Square.

David Hens and Andrew Sheader also gave their legs an airing when they donned skirts, wellies and garters while working for Ratedale Security.

There was no gunge in sight at the school’s Red Nose Day show, when Steven Thama showed his moves as a Michael Jackson look-a-like.

Over at Ifield Middle School there were red noses all round as the children raised money with a bring and buy sale; while at Copthorne Junior School, headteacher Alistair Hawtin allowed eight-year-old Susan Malroney to shave off half his beard. Brave man!
