'˜Gatwick Gusher' protestor arrests

Police were called to Horse Hill at about 8.30am on Friday (February 19).

The men were arrested on suspicion of ‘interfering with the vehicle’.

Members of Horse Hill Protection Group (HHPG) said they were there to monitor safety issues as Government cuts had left the Environment Agency inadequately equipped for the task.

Isabelle Bish said a member of the group was arrested after he had held up a lorry on its way to the site by attaching himself to it.

The drill site was nicknamed the Gatwick Gusher after oil company UK Oil & Gas Investments announced it could contain up to 100bn barrels of oil last year.

Various environmental groups’ members were out with placards on Saturday either protesting against fossil fuel use in general, or against fracking in particular.

UKOG has said it does not expect to have to use hydraulic fracturing or ‘fracking’ to release the oil.

However, anti-fracking campaign groups fear that large deposits of shale gas could be found, creating a huge incentive for fracking to take place.
