Goblins set to race again

LITTLEHAMPTON Community School will play host to a group of green goblins next Saturday, May 19.

But rather than being Spiderman's enemies these goblins are green for an ecologically sound reason '” they are cars which run on electricity.

Children from eight local primary schools will be taking part in the challenge to design, build and race their cars around the Oval Race Club's circuit.

The winning car will be the one which completes the most laps.

The schools which will take part are Flora McDonald, defending their win at last year's event, St Mary's Climping, Rustington County Primary, Connaught, Summerlea, Georgian Gardens, St Philip's Arundel and Downsbrook Middle in Worthing.

Two other schools from outside the area may also be joining the teams to race on the day.

Although not open for public viewing, spectators from the contestants' families and schools have been invited and Littlehampton Lions Club are laying on a barbecue for them.

Organiser Sara Hopkins, community liaison manager at Littlehampton Community School, said: "The great thing about this year's race is that it is on a proper race track.

"Last year we held it on the tennis courts at the school and although that worked fine this year the kids will get more of a real feel of it being a race.

"Jim Hazelgrove who runs the Oval Race Club has been brilliant. He helped us organise last year's and he was so impressed that he has let us use his go-kart track this time."

Littlehampton and Arun councillor Mark Butler will compere the race, which is expected to last around an hour.

Each team has been provided with a kit car by Greenpower which they must build ready for the race.

Results will be printed in the following week's Gazette.
