Grayham's winning art club debut

Newcomer Grayham Goll marked his debut in Felpham Art Group's annual show with a top prize.

Mr Goll collected the President's Plate for best artistic merit for his tonal watercolour Tide's Out.

Based on postcards, this showed a sepia-style harbour scene with a fishing boat on the sand at low tide.

His success came just three months after he joined the group. He said: "It feels good to win the award and a privilege. It's a real boost for my painting."

Mr Goll (67), of South Walk, Middleton, has been painting seriously for about ten years and has an architectural background. He is still chairman of an art group near his former home in Surrey, but had never won an award at its displays.

The painting was among about 180 framed works on show by the art group's members at the St Mary's Centre at the exhibition.

They included a wide range of media with new techniques alongside traditional methods to reach a standard said to be the best since the group started in 1980.
