Group set up to fundraise for Bexhill's St Barnabas Church

A group has been set up to help raise money towards the maintenance of an historic church saved from threatened demolition.

The Friends of St Barnabas was formed this week.

The Victorian listed building faced being knocked down earlier this year and the original plan was to move the St Barnabas congregation to St Andrew's Church while a new one was built.

It caused controversy but in late August the church was saved at the eleventh hour when Father Roger Crosthwaite, priest-in-charge at St Barnabas, received the news the Church Commissioners were withdrawing plans to close down and rebuild the place of worship.

Dru Tramaseur, chairman of the Cantelupe Community Association (CCA), said: "We would like to thank everyone who supported our efforts in helping to save the historic St Barnabas Church from threatened demolition.

"We are committed to helping everyone use and enjoy this special, listed building. A separate organisation, The Friends of St Barnabas, has been formed to fundraise for the fabric of the building and our first joint venture with the Friends is to sell charity Christmas cards in the church.

"A selection of designs from 25 different national charities will be available, and the church will be open from tomorrow (Saturday) from 10am to 4pm."

St Barnabas is also open Sundays from the end of service - around 12 noon - to 1pm, Tuesday to Friday 11am to 4pm.

Cards will be on sale at the above times until Sunday December 20.
